Bruant, Aristide

   songwriter
   Born in Courtenay, Aristide Bruant began, around 1875, to perform his own songs in the music halls of Montmartre. He became popular at the well-known Chat noir, which was his main locale. His songs, which have remained famous, evoke the daily life of the Parisian districts (À la Villette, À ménilmontant), reflecting the anarchy and the particular social reality of the fin de siècle period (À la Roquette, Nini Peau d'chien), or expressing the sen-timentalism of his era (Rose blanche). Colorful and sad ballads, written in the popular language, making free use of Parisian argot, were assembled in collections (Dans la rue. . ., 3 volumes, 1889-1909; Chansons et monologues, 1896-97; and Sur la route, 1897). The author of a number of serialized stories, Bruant also composed a Dictionnaire de l'argot au XXe siècle (1901).
